Becoming a page in the Georgia State Senate is a wonderful
experience for young Georgians. Pages learn about the process of state
government and how laws are debated and made. This experience is a life
long memory and will expand any youth's interest in the political process.
Pages have the opportunity to not only meet other pages from around the
state, but also Senators and the Lt. Governor (who presides as President
of the State Senate) of Georgia.
The duties of a page
include running errands for Senators and delivering messages from outside
the chamber to the Senators who are inside.
Pages
should be at least twelve years old and dress in a coat and tie if a boy
or an appropriate skirt or dress if a girl. On the day of service, pages
should report to the Senate Information Booth (located outside the Senate
Chambers on the Third Floor) by 9:00 AM. The paging service will end at
12:00 PM that same day. Pages must arrange for their own travel to and
from the capitol.
Pages are paid $10 for their service and
have the opportunity to have their picture taken with Senator Smith and
the Lt. Governor. Pages will also be given a certificate for their
service, which can be used as an excuse from school for that day. It is
encouraged that youths who serve as a page share their experience with
their classmates when they return to school.
Space is
limited but it is appropriate for youths serving as pages to serve with
another youth from the same district on the same day.
If
you are interested in serving as a page in the Georgia State Senate,
please contact Senator Smith.
